Have you always wanted to write a collection of short stories, but don’t know where to begin? Do you already have some stories that you’d like to publish, but don’t know how to link them together? Are you searching for a theme, a title or a USP for your collection? In this 2-part workshop full of discussions, guided readings, in-depth analysis of your own work and plenty of writing exercises to get the words flowing, award-winning author Kirsty Logan will guide you through everything involved in putting together a compelling collection of short stories.

If you want to write a short story collection but don’t have the stories written yet, Part 1 (Saturday 14th) will focus on exploring themes, motifs, and characters you’re interested in, as well as discovering your own unique voice and perspective to spark new story ideas.
If you already have short stories that you would like to turn into a collection, Part 2 (Sunday 15th) will focus on sifting them in a mindful and tactical way, identifying an overall mood and exploring different angles and perspectives to complete it and order the stories in the most effective way.

Tickets are available for one or both days but participants are encouraged to take part in both,  as the workshops are designed to help you gain a better understanding of your own work and how your stories speak to one another. Pinpoint the themes you often revisit, play with different forms and structures, deepen character, and learn to look critically at your own work to make sure your stories aren’t covering the same ground as the other ones in the book. Through a mix of discussions and exercises, you will gain a clearer understanding of what makes a strong short story collection – as well as how to achieve this for yourself.

The workshops will run from 10:00-13:30 on both days.

Kirsty Logan is the award-winning author of six books, including three short story collections which have won prizes and been optioned for TV, adapted for theatre, broadcast on radio, interpreted in dance, translated in several languages, and distributed from a vintage Wurlitzer cigarette machine. She is currently working on a new story collection and a chapbook of flash fiction.
