Summer 2019 Writing Retreats

In May/June 2019, join us in rural Italy for one of two glorious writing retreats (or come along for both)! Read on to find out more about where we’ll be staying and what we’ll be doing

Week One: Wednesday May 29th to Tuesday June 4th

Week Two: Wednesday June 5th to Tuesday June 11th

La Macchina Fissa, Mantova, Italy

Booking: victoria@thereaderberlin.com

Welcome to La Macchina Fissa, home of Reading Retreats in Rural Italy, a rambling former pump house in the Italian countryside, just a  short distance from the beautiful, historic town of Verona. Along with a collection of over 5000 books, 200 paintings, a couple of pianos, cats, goats and a plant collection, La Macchina is the ideal spot for our writing retreats, possessing plenty of room to spread out indoors and out, as well as great workshop, dining and reading spaces. This year, you’ll also find all your meals (and wine!) included, meaning the retreats are better value than ever, and you can really focus on your writing with no distractions (unless you count that book collection).

We’ll be hosted by the inspiring Clark Lawrence and there’ll be two experienced tutors on hand to guide you: Reader Berlin founder Victoria Gosling and the ever-popular Jane Flett, who’s taking a break from her sold-out Berlin courses to bring her teaching to warmer climes.

“Last year’s retreat was magical! It was a perfect setting for inspiration and creativity and a good balance between writing, downtime and fun activities. My one to ones gave me some good insight into the world of publishing and helped me edit some of my existing pieces, one of which went on to be accepted for print in an anthology!”  – Tonisha

Week One is for those looking for some rigorous writing instruction to kickstart or restart their practice. With daily workshops, regular scheduled writing sessions and one-to-one mentoring, you’ll leave Italy with a notebook stuffed with new ideas and a new sense of direction in your writing.

Week Two is ideal for those already at work on a project, and looking for the time and motivation to dedicate to it fully. You’ll benefit from one-to-one mentoring and the encouragement of your fellow writers in our writing sessions, but your time generally will be looser for you to schedule as you see fit—so you’ll finally finish those stories!

Or some of you might decide that seven days just isn’t long enough, in which case we invite you to join us for the full fortnight

You’ll find more information on our Programme Page. You can also get updates and follow our progress on our Facebook event page here.

“The retreat was extremely productive for me.” – Jacinta
