Thursday Salon with Ryan Van Winkle

RYAN VAN WINKLE, poet extraordinaire and joyous performer, will be joining us from Edinburgh on Thursday 4th May at 7pm for an intimate gathering in the cellar bar and library of Berlin’s Circus Hostel.

Taking place just a couple of days prior to the weekend workshop Ryan will be teaching for The Reader (details below), we’re asking him to read to us from his work, answer your questions, and be the judge of our first live-writing competition in 2017. The poet, live artist, podcaster and critic has received many accolades for his atmospheric collections. His most recent work, The Good Dark, won the Saltire Society’s 2015 Poetry Book of the Year award, and his poems have appeared in New Writing Scotland, The Prairie Schooner, The American Poetry Review, AGNI and Best Scottish Poems 2015.

On the night, Ryan will be reading us new poems and pieces from his two award winning collections, ‘The Good Dark’ and ‘Tomorrow, We Will Live Here’. Following on, there will be a Q&A, where you’ll be invited to ask Ryan about his work, poetry, magic … and whatever else is on your mind.

We’ll also be hosting a live-writing competition – with prizes! – to be judged by Ryan on the night.

Ryan is also a creative writing tutor, and has previously taught at The Poetry School in London and the SUISS Summer School at Edinbrgh University. He was awarded a Robert Louis Stevenson fellowship in 2012 and a residency at The Studios of Key West in 2016. As a member of Highlight Arts he has organized festivals and translation workshops in Syria, Pakistan and Iraq.

AND, for a whole weekend on the 6th of May, Ryan will be leading an intensive poetry workshop: “Discover the Poet Inside” with The Reader Berlin!
