Introduction to trans* literature for writers with Lukas Reimann

In this workshop we will read texts by trans* writers about trans* themes. We will talk about what makes literature trans* and how we can write about gender in interesting, engaging and innovative ways. We will write to explore our own points of view, as well as to try out new approaches and ideas.

The workshop is open for anyone, no matter if your writing is already deeply engaged with these themes, or if you are just thinking about, maybe, at some point introducing transgender characters or themes.

We will touch on questions of audience, what it means to let your own experiences inform your writing, and what it means to write inclusively and from perspectives that are not your own.

This is the space to bring all your questions, worries and excitement about gender in literature.

Through reading we will explore how others have approached these themes, and in this way come closer to what might work in our own writing. The participants will be provided with reading materials as preparation for the workshop.

As no workshop will ever be able to touch on every facet of such a broad category of literature, participants are invited to write Lukas beforehand if they have specific questions they would like to explore. This could for example be related to genres or themes.

Lukas Kofoed Reimann (he/him) is a writer and editor living in Berlin. In 2019 he wrote his masters thesis on kinship in trans* literature at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. Since then, he has written both (flash) fiction, speculative memoir and academic essays in English and Danish. In 2022 his text ‚Undiagnosed’ was selected as a runner up for the Berlin Writing Prize. Lately his work has been published in Hot Pot Magazine and in SAND Journal. In 2023 his writing was supported through the Arbeitsstipendien für nicht-deutschsprachige Literatur from the Berlin senate. He is a fiction editor for Oranges Journal.
