*** This is a Two-day workshop happening on two WEEKDAY evenings (Tuesday July 13th and Tuesday July 20th), and will require preparation material ***
Have you ever wanted to add more comedy to your writing? You needn’t be a stand-up comedian or even have taken an improv class (not that that would hurt!). In this class you’ll learn simple techniques to get you writing in a relatable and funny way, using your own life as a springboard. All great comedy is detailed, surprising, and relatable and we’ll be going through exercises that drill just that.
The class will be divided in two sections, each a lively blend of discussion, workshopping ideas and writing exercises.
In class 1 we’ll use an “Honest dating profile” as the basis for our first bit of authentic writing. You’ll be sent a detailed worksheet and come to the class with it pre-written. We’ll share what we have written and you’ll receive honest and detailed feedback – a classic good, bad and ugly! We’ll discuss what we think “good” and “bad” comedy is, and use improv methods/exercises to explore more comedy approaches. And there will be homework!
In class 2 we’ll use our homework as a basis for discussion. We’ll talk about how to be ‘self-deprecating’ in a fun way that others can laugh along with, and play with writing satirical headlines inspired by our lives.
This is a class for any experience level and helpful for all genres of writing, you only have to be willing to be honest with yourself while not taking yourself too seriously! This isn’t a class about joke structure, we won’t be sharing our favourite knock-knock jokes. We’ll be getting to the meat and bones of what “funny” is and I’ll show you how you can tap into that resource in yourself.
